President of Montreal Black History Month Visits Open Door
05 Mar, 2015
Mike Farkas, President of Montreal Black History Month, painted an historical fresco of the black population in Montreal and in Little Burgundy in particular. The underground railroad, jazz clubs and thriving community centres were all pieces of a strong cultural mosaic that can be felt even today. Even if many of the historical landmarks are no longer standing, the seeds that were planted have taken root. Mike’s own band, Heart Hand Soul, played three songs to an enchanted audience. Mike gave us a black history quiz and those lucky enough to be the first to answer were rewarded with the 2015 Black History Calendar to proudly take home. It’s taken a couple of years to get this busy man to speak to Open Door and we certainly hope it won’t be years until he comes back.
