A Just Community
24 Mar, 2014
On March 20 at Open Door Jean-Marc led us in reflection about what is a Just Community. Can community survive the ideology of a global economy?
The conventional wisdom that human and societal progress is achieved through greater wealth is a major blow to a Just Community. In fact, the global economy produces a greater concentration of the poor and a disempowering of community and of community activism through islands of self interest.
And what role does the law play?
Under the world systems of economical growth, the law produces predictability in the pursuit of control by elites and greater disparities or disengagement of individuals in community.
In their own times, Jesus, Buddha, St Francis of Assisi, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Thomas Merton and others denounced the law and the elite that diminishes Humanity and Community .
Perhaps the question needs to be asked: in order to have a Just Community, do we need laws?
