Canadian Prisons See Elevated Violence

The established norm of living behind bars has already been extremely unsafe, but almost two-thirds of Canadian maximum security prisons are seeing ever-increased instances of inmate violence since 2003.

These instances of violence include suicide, sexual assault, hostage-taking, and murder and have been reported in several Canadian penitentiaries, including the recently closed Kingston Penitentiary. According to statistics, more violence has occurred in prisons in the past year than in the past ten years
