Arlene Barker, Affectionately Known as “Barka”
17 Nov, 2014
Arlene Barker, affectionately known as “Barka” and “the all-rounder” passed away on November 4th 2014. Barker was a founding member of MSCM, and member of the Steering Committee for many years. It was through her efforts that Union United Church developed and sustained to this day a prison ministry fellowship that saw members of Union United Church visiting Cowansville and Drummond Penitentiaries on a regular basis for Bible Study with inmates and to forge lasting bonds with isolated men – bonds that would last long after the men had been released from prison.
Barker always introduced herself at Open Door as “the All-Rounder”- signifying her involvement in all aspects of MSCM- including Circles of Support and Accountability (CoSA), and organizing bus trips of volunteers to visit prisons– especially on the occasion of Kwanza celebrations, and during black history month. Her generosity to all was well known and she was particularly loved by the inmates from the Caribbean community with whom she shared a heritage. MSCM has lost one of our founding members- but she will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace Barker.
