37 attended Open Door Last Tuesday

13 Nov, 2013

A full house of some 37 participants attended Open Door on Tuesday 12 November and were treated to a presentation by Floris, the President of the Sierra Club of Quebec, who outlined the purpose of the volunteer driven Club and answered many questions about their activities and modus operandus.

Founded in 1892 by John Muir, Sierra Club is the biggest and oldest environmental organization of North America.  They  “count on members and volunteers to protect the fragile ecosystems on which we depend for enjoyment and livelihoods.”

Before the main topic of the night, much discussion was shared by all flowing from Tony’s “spiritual moment” on how to deal with anger issues.

I learned from Floris that the Sierra Club is good for people who want to make real changes in environmental politics but who do not want to do radical things that might get them arrested. Floris and his team talk to politicians, mobilize citizens and educate the public to improve the local environment. It was a shock to all of us at Open Door to learn that because of our leaky underground water pipes, Montreal has the highest water usage in the world. Let’s invite the Sierra Club back to Open Door in 2014 to learn more about this.
